How the rankings work

1. 1One score per game

   50 is an average game. Every 10 points is one big step better or worse than average. 70 is excellent. 80 is historic.

2. 2Eight stats count

   Turnovers, passing yards and touchdown passes matter most. Then completion rate, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Yards per attempt and the defense he faced count a little.

3. 3Judged against its own season

   Each game is compared with every other game that same year, so 300 yards in 2003 is worth more than 300 yards today.

4. 4The situation adds a point

   One point each for a win, a road game, bad weather, a game-winning drive, a comeback from 14 or more down, and playing without a regular top target. Nothing is ever taken away.

5. 5The stakes add more

   A playoff win adds 1 more point. A Super Bowl win adds 2.

6. 6Running can only help

   A big rushing day counts. A quiet one does not hurt. Kneel-downs at the end of a win are ignored.

7. 7Real games only

   Since 1999 the quarterback has to play all four quarters. Leave hurt and it does not count. A starter benched for bad play still counts, because he earned it. Before 1999 there is no play-by-play, so every game with 10 or more passes counts.

   The greatest quarterbacks are ranked by great games plus playoff wins, with a championship counting double. Greatness is doing it again and again, and doing it when it counts.
